Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reaching for the Arts?

Founded in 2015, Reaching for the Arts (RFA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides after-school arts education programs in under-resourced schools and schools in disadvantaged areas, as a means of enhancing students' general development and career aspirations. By providing year-long instruction, RFA makes arts education a reality for children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts.  Our current programs serve students in upper elementary and middle school, with a focus on closing the gap in scare middle school program opportunities and providing students the education they need to apply to specialty high schools in New York City.

Where are your programs located?

RFA’s partner schools are located in Manhattan, on the West Side and in Harlem. Beyond its core partner school activities, RFA provides students with access to private lessons to accelerate their instruction and performance opportunities.

What impact does your program have on students?

RFA's programs improve students’ academic achievement, self-confidence, and motivation for school in addition to fostering their passions in the arts.  Students’ participation in RFA's programs and  performances opportunities contributes to their creativity as well as to social and emotional capacities. With our partnership, over 40 students have gained admittance into specialty high schools, including the esteemed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, maintaining a 98% success rate in further students' arts aspirations and education.

What makes RFA different from other arts education programs?

RFA focuses on closing the arts achievement gap. Many arts education and after school programs focus on elementary school students, but there remains a consistent lack of opportunity at the middle school level. RFA focuses primarily on these students and elevating their education to afford them the skills to pursue their passions and dreams. Through our efforts, RFA hopes to bring more diversity and equity to the classical arts.
